Building Extensible Platforms

Platform Engineering Day, KubeCon EU Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Have you ever tried to build a house on quicksand? I can’t imagine it would work very well! The ground is so chaotic and the landscape itself isn’t reliable enough to be the foundation you need. It feels like you can’t even get started, let alone build something sturdy enough to last.

Honestly, trying to build a platform in today’s environment feels just as chaotic. Things are churning faster and faster, and just when you’ve finished implementing it, something’s deprecated and broken. It feels like things get thrown out just as fast as they’re built. Quarterly planning? Long-term thinking? Some days they feel like relics of the past, so how do we build platforms now?

In this session, join Hazel as she walks through what makes a platform truly extensible, instead of just configurable. Together, we’ll walk through tenets of platform design that she uses to create platforms that can grow and evolve gracefully over time.

She’ll also levy a challenge for the platform engineering community: The truly extensible platform of her dreams, one that’s capable of solving the platform extension problem… Can we build it?
